Radiant Vision Systems unveils a turnkey inspection solution leveraging its photometry-based imaging technology for challenging machine vision tasks at The ASSEMBLY Show, taking place October 24-26 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, U.S.A.

Redmond, WA (PRWEB) October 05, 2017

Radiant Vision Systems, a leading provider of high-resolution imaging solutions for automated visual analysis of light and color, announces that it will demonstrate new applications of its photometry-based imaging technology for machine vision inspection at The ASSEMBLY Show, taking place October 24-26 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, U.S.A.

Radiant Vision Systems is globally-recognized for light and color measurement expertise in display testing, backlit components, light sources, and other self-illuminating devices. With CCD resolutions to 29 megapixels, broad dynamic range to 73.4 decibels, and cooled, interline CCD technology to minimize image noise, Radiant’s ProMetric® Imaging Photometers and Colorimeters capture highly-detailed images of devices that allow these systems to measure and evaluate precise variations in luminance, chromaticity, pixel-level defects, and more. Utilizing the same technical advantages for light measurement, Radiant now applies its imaging solutions to the most challenging machine vision inspection applications, providing an alternative imaging platform for evaluating complex assemblies and detecting subtle component flaws. These systems bridge a long-standing technological gap in manufacturing environments where human inspectors are necessary for their superior perception of defects, but where automation is desired for its efficiency.

From the floor of The Assembly Show, Radiant will unveil the first of its advanced vision product offerings with live demonstrations of a completely new turnkey, high-resolution inspection system for in-line assembly verification. The new inspection station is a fully-integrated machine vision system that utilizes a Radiant Vision Systems ProMetric® Imaging Photometer, bright field lighting, and programmable inspection software to detect subtle, low-contrast defects on complex assemblies. With adjustable height and portability, the system rolls up to production lines to perform real-time quality control with greater accuracy and repeatability than human inspectors or traditional machine vision systems, while occupying the same footprint as an inspector on the line. The system performs a range of inspections, simultaneously or in sequence, with tools for determining presence, position, and routing of cables, fasteners, connectors, screws, and a range of other internal components. Defects such as loose connectors and misrouted cables, which can pass functional test or go unnoticed by human inspectors, may worsen in shipping or with device usage. Applied before ICT or assembly enclosure, this in-line system provides final verification of all internal components to prevent latent failures and returned/recalled products.

Attendees of The ASSEMBLY Show will be the first to see Radiant’s new in-line inspection station perform real-time inspection, and discuss applications with Radiant’s advanced vision solutions experts. Complimentary exhibit hall access is available using Radiant Discount Code RVSvip. For information or to register for The ASSEMBLY Show, visit http://www.theassemblyshow.com. Learn more about Radiant Vision Systems by visiting Booth #400 at the show or online at http://www.RadiantVisionSystems.com.

The new interactive exhibits in the America's Presidents exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. are of paramount importance to the Portrait Gallery and its mission.

Corrales, NM (PRWEB) October 05, 2017

Ideum (http://www.ideum.com) announces the installation of the first digital interactive exhibits in the America's Presidents exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. America's Presidents reopened to the public on September 22, 2017, after nearly two years of renovations. The gallery features three new interactive kiosks that provide a window into the museum's collection of presidential portraits, many of which are not on display. The kiosks allow visitors to explore these portraits in beautiful high-resolution detail, and learn more about many of them.

Working closely with gallery curators and educational staff, Ideum created custom software and kiosks to represent both the artworks and the history of America's presidents. Special collections highlight portraits of the first ladies and artworks by Andy Warhol, George Tames, Peter Hurd, Patrick Oliphant, and Time magazine. The kiosks have unique widescreen ultra high-resolution displays with multitouch capabilities, and Ideum's Industrial Design group collaborated with the Smithsonian exhibit team to design the three custom bronze-colored kiosks to complement the aesthetics of the new gallery space.

"We were thrilled to have an opportunity to work with great team at the Smithsonian to help bring digital interactives into the gallery space for the first time," said Ideum Creative Director and Founder Jim Spadaccini. Visitors use a 3D timeline to move through the decades from the nation's founding to the present. Users can also zoom into paintings to view fine details, rotate and enlarge scanned sculptures and other 3D scanned objects, and investigate special collections and related items. The digital collection includes items found in the gallery, but also hundreds of other pieces not presently on public display. All materials are presented in both English and Spanish.

The new kiosks offer an intuitive user interface and new information to explore, but they are also designed for a modern, dynamic museum environment. Ideum worked with Smithsonian staff to specify the fiber extenders to take the USB and 4K UHD video signals across nearly the entire length of the Portrait Gallery building. Remotely connecting the installation's computers allows staff to easily maintain and update the exhibits. And as with all Ideum products, they were designed and built in the USA to exacting standards, crafted from aircraft-grade aluminum and featuring lockable ports to ensure security.

"We wanted to design and integrate touchscreen technology into this classic gallery in a seamless way, to extend and deepen the visitor experience without competing with the portraits themselves," said Spadaccini. "Ideum is proud to have played a part in giving people new ways to explore this unique historical collection."

GetPayroll’s payroll app Simon Payroll featured in Beauty Launchpad’s September 2017 issue in their Business Affairs section. Designed specifically for small businesses, GetPayroll’s newest app makes salon money management a snap.

Lewisville, TX (PRWEB) October 06, 2017

GetPayroll’s payroll app Simon Payroll featured in Beauty Launchpad’s September 2017 issue in their Business Affairs section. Designed specifically for small businesses, GetPayroll’s newest app makes salon money management a snap.

GetPayroll is gaining attention in the beauty industry with multiple interviews and articles to be published in Beauty Launchpad, Nail Pro, Beauty Store Business, and MEDIcalSpas magazines.

“With the launch of Simon Payroll App in iTunes and Google Play, I began to look at industries where this type of payroll service would be most beneficial, and the salon and spa industry jumped out at me,” says Charles Read, President of GetPayroll, “Most salon and spa businesses have between one and 10 employees. Salon owners must wear many hats. Not only do they have to run the business, find new employees, market the company, do payroll, in most cases, but they also have to serve the clients too. How often do you see the salon owner behind the chair?”

Salon owners are artistic masters, but they may not be proficient at the business of running a company. Devon Kirk, Director of Marketing at GetPayroll, was an esthetician for almost 30-years and day spa owner for seven years says, “I wish I had Simon when I owned my business. I would sit in a treatment room between clients and figure out my payroll.” After trying expensive payroll services that were out of her budget, she started doing payroll on her own and ended up with costly IRS fines for payroll tax errors.

“Enter Simon. The app, available on both Apple and Android, is revolutionizing the lives of micro beauty businesses with up to 10 employees. Proprietary SmartPay technology allows entrepreneurs to run payroll in three simple clicks without worrying about miscalculating the books or incurring IRS fines.”

With Simon, the guesswork is removed: Tax payments, quarterly filings, and year-end forms are filed automatically at prices that won’t break the bank. Simon costs $20 per payroll for one to five employees, and $30 for a staff of six to 10, sans monthly or sign-up fees.

Revolutionary new discovery platform offers researchers unique insights into the microbiome

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) October 06, 2017

Phase Genomics, the industry leader in Hi-C-based genomic technologies, launched its ProxiMeta™ Hi-C metagenome deconvolution product, featuring the first commercially available Hi-C kit. Researchers can use the ProxiMeta Hi-C kit and accompanying cloud-based bioinformatics software to perform Hi-C metagenome deconvolution using their own facilities, supplementing the company’s full-service ProxiMeta offering launched in May 2017. Additionally, a newly available paper demonstrates the technology’s power to assemble over 250 genomes from a single human fecal sample.

“Using the ProxiMeta kit and our computational tools, researchers can now assemble numerous high-quality genomes from mixed samples without culturing, high-molecular-weight DNA extraction, or any a priori information,” said Dr. Ivan Liachko, CEO of Phase Genomics. “The applications of this technology are broad and exciting, and we’ve shown that ProxiMeta can be used to discover many novel species, detect plasmid-host interactions, and identify strain-level genetic variation. We are even more excited to see all the discoveries that this technology will enable as it is adopted by the wider scientific community.”

Microbiome samples are made up of many different microorganisms that must be sequenced together. A key challenge in metagenomics is determining which DNA sequences originated from which organism in the mix. ProxiMeta solves this problem using an enhanced version of the chromatin capture technique Hi-C, which measures the physical structure of microbial genomes while their cells are still intact.

This powerful innovation enables researchers to study individual microbial communities with unprecedented precision, opening the door to deeper, more rapid discoveries in fields like the microbiome, infectious disease, agriculture, and antibiotic resistance.

"Phase Genomics' ProxiMeta Hi-C solution makes innovative use of Illumina reads to conduct metagenomic deconvolution and extract more complete sequence information from mixed microbiome samples,” said Gary Schroth, PhD, Vice President of Genomics Development and Distinguished Scientist for Illumina. “This technology promises to open many new metagenomic applications and we’re excited to see it come to market."

ProxiMeta™ includes a kit for sample processing, cloud-based software for analysis, and full customer support. For more information, email your inquiry to info(at)phasegenomics(dot)com or visit their website at http://www.phasegenomics.com.

Scientists at the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution Awarded One of Eight Nationwide Transformative Research Awards – Totaling $3 million

The N. I. H. announced today that one of eight Transformative Research Awards granted each year will be received by the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution (FfAME). Directed by Dr. Steven Benner at FfAME, the project focuses on "synthetic biology" and "paleo-molecular biology", with applications in diagnostic products such as Zika kits, SARS, MERS, Hepatitis B and C, respiratory viruses and more.

Alachua, Florida (PRWEB) October 09, 2017

The National Institutes of Health announced today that one of eight Transformative Research Awards granted each year nationwide will be received by the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution (FfAME) in Alachua, Florida. This award, totaling ~ $3.5 million, was established in 2009 to promote cross-cutting, interdisciplinary research to meet challenging problems in the biomedical sciences. It is granted to laboratories that propose research that could potentially create or challenge existing paradigms. The project will be directed by Dr. Steven Benner at the FfAME.

This award recognizes three decades of pioneering work in the Benner Laboratories that helped established the fields of "synthetic biology" and "paleomolecular biology". Synthetic biology seeks to connect biochemical molecules to behaviors seen in living organisms, including the ability to respond to their environments, reproduce, adapt and evolve. It does so not by dissecting living systems, but rather by constructing living systems from the bottom up. This approach forces scientists away from tightly scripted "hypothesis based research" in ways that leads to new discoveries and new paradigms.

Using this research strategy, the Benner laboratory re-invented DNA, creating new genetic systems that encode information with as many as 10 different building blocks, far more than the four building blocks found in natural DNA. This work has transformed our understanding of DNA and genetics in general. It is currently guiding NASA in its search for extraterrestrial life on Mars, Enceladus, and elsewhere in the solar system. Further, this expanded DNA is allowing the generation of proteins with more than the 20 amino acids found in natural proteins. Under controlled laboratory conditions, the system can adapt under the guidance of molecular scientist to produce new receptors, ligands and catalyst having biomedical impact. This transformative research award will allow the full potential of synthetic biology to be realized.

The transformative research project that the NIH will support in the Benner laboratory will create cells that exploit this expanded genetic alphabet. "Constructing cells that use synthetic genetic systems is the ultimate "grand challenge" in biomolecular science," said Prof. Benner. "We expect that in addition to creating new technology, this work will also drive discovery of a deep understanding of biological systems, how the parts work together to create a whole in a living cell."

Already, this synthetic biology work has had practical medical value. The artificial genetics created at the FfAME support diagnostics products for HIV, hepatitis B and C, and respiratory disease viruses, as well as tests for cystic fibrosis used in genetic counseling. Synthetic DNA from FfAME also supports kits for public health surveillance for mosquito-borne viruses, noroviruses, and coronaviruses (e.g. SARS, MERS). The expanded DNA is also supporting a new phase in biotechnology where DNA molecule are synthesized, in a revolution that may soon match the revolution in medicine that was created by low-cost easy DNA sequencing.

This award also reflects the discoveries about evolution made using this synthetic biology. FfAME scientists, in collaboration with the group of Prof. Weihong Tan at the University of Florida, have shown that these artificial genetic systems can be replicated, evolved, and adapted in the laboratory. This laboratory evolution has delivered new molecules that bind to breast cancer cells, liver cancer cells, and proteins from anthrax. Work with Firebird Biomolecular Sciences LLC, also in Alachua, and the laboratory of Brian Paegel at The Scripps Research Institute (Jupiter FL) is promising to develop a new class of drugs that not only bind to proteins that cause diseases, but also destroy them.

The Transformative Research Award program is one of four programs run from the NIH "Common Fund", two of which are directed at early stage researchers. “I continually point to this program as an example of the creative and revolutionary research NIH supports,” said NIH Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. “The quality of the investigators and the impact their research has on the biomedical field is extraordinary.”

What is remarkable about this particular award is its venue. "The other Transformative Awards went to established institutions, specifically, UCLA, MIT, Columbia, Rockefeller, Harvard, CalTech and the University of Washington," noted Nigel Richards, Professor at Cardiff University and a member of the Board of Directors of FfAME. "This is excellent company for FfAME, which received the only Transformative Award nationwide granted to a private foundation. This shows the depth and breadth of the science being done at the FfAME today."

About the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution

The FfAME was founded in 2001 as a non‐profit research organization to addresses “big questions”, from the extent of life in the cosmos to the molecular biology of human disease. FfAME scientists also use insights made by addressing big questions to solve practical problems, including the diagnosis and treatment of disease, the extension of healthy life spans in humans, and application of the molecular sciences, bioinformatics, and engineering to commerce.

Supported by philanthropy, technology transfer, and grants and contracts from public and private organizations, including the John Templeton Foundation and the Templeton World Charity Foundation, the FfAME is one of the few non‐profit, private scientific organizations in North Central Florida. Its accomplishments in technology include the development of materials to measure the load of viruses in infected patients, surveillance of public spaces for Zika, norovirus, and other infectious agents, whole genome sequencing, and new catalysts for human therapy.

On the more exotic side, FfAME scientists perform “Jurassic Park” experiments that resurrect genes and proteins from now‐extinct organisms, using these to understand the evolution of life on Earth in its changing environment. FfAME is a long‐standing member of the NASA Astrobiology Institute, where it has contributed to the search for biology on Mars, Titan, and elsewhere in the Solar System.

FfAME is committed to public outreach and education. The book: Life, the Universe, and the Scientific Method, teaches scientific methods by seeking answers to “big” questions such as: Does alien life exist? FfAME staff lecture on space exploration at Cape Canaveral and elsewhere, and give public lectures across the country and around the world. Find more information at: http://www.ffame.org.

Adelaide, Australia (PRWEB) October 09, 2017

OrthAlign, Inc., a privately held U.S.-based medical device and technology company, announced today that the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved OrthAlign's advanced precision technologies for Direct Anterior Approach Total Hip (DAA HipAlign®) and Partial Knee Arthroplasty (UniAlign®) surgeries to be included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

Dr. Price Gallie, orthopaedic surgeon at Gold Coast University Hospital in Queensland, Australia, commented, "Based on its well-established KneeAlign® platform for total knees, availability of OrthAlign's technology in Australia for direct anterior hip arthroplasty and partial knee replacement surgeries is an exciting development. The use of handheld navigation within the surgical field enhances surgical accuracy with minimal disruption to the surgical workflow, as demonstrated by my regular use of KneeAlign. I'm particularly excited about DAA HipAlign, as it will allow improved accuracy of cup placement and restoration of leg length, ultimately leading to better outcomes for my patients."

Recent global statistics have shown that the direct anterior approach for total hip arthroplasty is growing, as it arguably leads to quicker recovery, less pain, and more normal function for patients after hip replacement. DAA HipAlign does not require any pre-operative imaging or intraoperative fluoroscopy, while providing more clinically relevant positioning for cup placement and leg length measurement. Early clinical data from the United States demonstrates that surgeons can expect to reduce fluoroscopy exposure time by about 45%. Early clinical data from Japan shows cup placement (for both inclination and anteversion) accuracy of ±10°, with at least 95.9% confidence.

Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty procedures are also growing in market share, worldwide. UniAlign establishes the mechanical axis of the tibia, determining the varus/valgus angle and the posterior slope angle of the cutting block relative to the tibia, for the transverse resection. UniAlign has been validated in simulated use testing to achieve resection accuracy of ±2.0° in the coronal plane, ±3.0° in the sagittal plane and ±2.0 mm in depth, with at least 90% confidence.

“Australia is one of the world's most important navigation and technology markets for joint arthroplasty," said James Young Kim, OrthAlign's Vice President and General Manager of International. "We are pleased that DAA HipAlign and UniAlign are now available in the Australian market and are confident that surgeons will be impressed by its ease of use and accuracy."

DAA HipAlign and UniAlign will be included in OrthAlign Plus® handheld navigation devices, along with OrthAlign's award-winning KneeAlign® and Posterior HipAlign® technologies. To date, OrthAlign technology has successfully been used in over 65,000 cases, in over 25 countries, with more than 15 published international clinical studies demonstrating its accuracy.

OrthAlign will be showcasing its full portfolio of products at this year’s Australian Orthopaedic Association meeting in Adelaide, Australia, October 9-13, 2017 at booth #10.

“Chromebooks & Web Filtering: Everything You Need to Know” is a free webinar open to all K-12 school IT employees.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) October 09, 2017

Ed-tech solution provider Lightspeed Systems will be sharing its tips and tricks for filtering school Chromebook deployments in a webinar on Thursday, October 12, 2017. Registration for the free webinar “Chromebooks & Web Filtering: Everything You Need to Know” is open to all K-12 school IT personnel now until the webinar’s start time of 10 AM CDT.

Lightspeed Systems has been in the business of filtering schools since 1999, a track record that has helped establish the Lightspeed Systems Web Filter as the market-leading content filter in K-12 education. Lightspeed Systems Relay for Chrome is the company’s newest product, a Chromebook filtering/monitoring solution that has been adopted by hundreds of schools since its release this year.

In “Chromebooks & Web Filtering: Everything You Need to Know,” Lightspeed team members will be sharing their expertise gleaned from almost 20 years of filtering school networks, as well as the opportunities — and challenges — for keeping students safe and productive on their Chromebooks. The webinar will cover topics including:

  • Knowing when it's time to move filtering to the cloud
  • Filtering devices on- and off-campus
  • Differentiating policies based on users and groups
  • Seeing secure info — like Google searches, YouTube videos and Google Docs info— without a proxy or PAC files
  • Integrating with G Suite
  • Reporting user activity, including risky or dangerous behavior
  • Using filtering policies to keep students on-task and productive

“With more devices in students’ hands than ever, web filtering has become more of a challenge — and a more critical need,” says Lightspeed Systems Vice President of Marketing Amy Bennett. “It’s not just about blocking content; it’s also about making sure students have access to great resources, that they’re learning to use technology productively, and that they’re safe.”
