15th Annual eCybermission National Judging and Education Event Begins June 26

A U.S. Army sponsored, web-based science, technology, engineering and mathematics competition, eCybermission culminates in a week-long National Judging and Educational Event June 26-30.

LEESBURG, Va. (PRWEB) June 24, 2017

The 15th annual eCybermission, a U.S. Army sponsored, web-based science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competition, culminates in a week-long National Judging and Educational Event (NJ&EE) here June 26-30.

Twenty-one teams of students from grades six through nine - approximately 80 students - and their team advisors, will represent five U.S. regions at the NJ&EE. Moving on from state and regional competitions, the teams are vying for up to $9,000 of U.S. Savings Bonds (matured value) for each winning team member.

The national finalists also received an all-expense paid trip to the National Capitol Region where they will tour the monuments in Washington, D.C., and meet their Congressional representatives.

Each team will present their projects to a panel of judges who will select the winning teams. They will also display their projects during a National STEM Showcase.

The teams will be escorted by Soldiers, scientists and engineers from the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, the program managing agency on behalf of the Army Educational Outreach Program, who serve as student/team mentors.

In all, 5,768 teams competed in this year’s eCybermission, including 23,323 students in hands-on, inquiry-based learning projects that challenged them to formulate a solution to an identified community problem using scientific and engineering design best practices.

Led by an adult team advisor or teacher, students can consult and virtually engage with Army scientists and engineers as they complete their projects.

eCybermission challenges students to apply math and science to real world scenarios, pushing material beyond the classroom and encouraging community involvement. The program asks students to interact and network with the Department of Defense Science and Technology community, sharing their ideas and benefitting from the years of field experience of Army scientists and engineers.

The national finalists represent 16 states, with three teams coming from New York and two from Michigan. Other states represented are: Virginia, Massachusetts, Illinois, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, California, Hawaii and Oregon.

The National Finalists are:

6th Grade – “Ozone” from George W. Hewlett High School, Hewlett, NY; “GreenHouse Gals” from Lisle, Ill.; “KCL” from Mirman School, Los Angeles, Calif.; “The Rejuvenators” from Science Rocks U, Levelland, Texas; and “Columbia Green” from Columbia Elementary School, Madison, Ala.

7th Grade – “Excel Coders” from Excel Academy Charter School, Arvada, Colo.; “Heatwave” from West Middle School, Andover, Mass.; “Prep Tigers!” from Charlotte Preparatory School, Charlotte, N.C.; “The Scientific 4” from Kings Junior High School, Kings Mills, Ohio; and “Lanikai Science Squad” from Kailua Intermediate School, Kailua, Hawaii.

8th Grade – “E Block Schoolyard Gnomes” from Campbell Hall, North Hollywood, Calif.; “Mooovers and Shakers” from Science Rocks U, Levelland, Texas; “Ozonators” from Falcon Cove Middle School, Weston, Fla.; “The Rising Tides” from Battery Park City School, New York, N.Y.; and “Whiz Kids” from Lake Linden-Hubbell School, Lake Linden, Mich.

Freedom Fiber will be the fastest network in the State of Alabama, with speeds up to 10 gigs and a minimum speed of 100 megabits-per-second (mbps).

Foshee compared the excitement around the project to that like communities experienced in the 1930s when electricity expanded to rural areas.

“We care deeply about our residents and the communities we serve, and we understand the critical need for access to high speed Internet in order to thrive in the years ahead,” Foshee said. “This is why we are making a transformational investment to provide affordable access to the highest-speed fiber network available, and FiberRise has been a big part of helping us develop a plan to make this work, both economically and physically.”

Freedom Fiber will initially serve the cities of Hamilton and Winfield, with plans to expand the fiber optic network to more than 1,600 miles across Northwest Alabama covering areas across Marion, Lamar, Fayette and Winston counties beginning in 2018. Within five years, every rural home in the Tombigbee service area will have access to advanced fiber-optic Internet.

The role of FiberRise will be to build an optimized fiber infrastructure that will provide the capability for new advanced services and ultra fast broadband service, as well as custom fiber services tailored for small and large industries. These advanced solutions will be offered at very competitive prices generally available only in large urban cities.

What is a Deadbolt?

A deadbolt is a locking mechanism that is engaged by turning a knob or key, without a spring action. It has a steel bolt that extends into the door jamb and the strike plate of the door frame, making it more secure than a keyed entry doorknob. There are two types of deadbolts; single or double cylinder. The single-cylinder deadbolt is operated by a twist knob on the inside of the door and a key on the outside while the double-cylinder deadbolt is operated via a key on both inside and outside of the door. Single-cylinder deadbolts are most popular as they allow residents to escape the house much more easily in an emergency situation such as a fire.

How do Deadbolts Help Stop Forced Entry Burglaries?

According to the latest FBI statistics, there were an estimated 1.6 million burglaries in the United States in 2015. Out of all burglaries, 58 percent were the result of forced entry. Frenkel says “Every home should have a high quality deadbolt with a hardened steel bolt”. For the deadbolt to function properly and keep residences secure against burglaries, the steel bolt must extend fully into a hole on the door jamb that is reinforced with a metal strike plate. If the bolt doesn’t extend all the way into the hole or if a strike plate isn't used, the lock and door frame can be compromised. “When someone kicks in a door, it’s not typically the door that breaks, it’s the door frame,” Frenkel says; “Three inch screws should be used to reinforce the strike plate into the studs of the frame of the house.”

Home Security Only Works if Used Correctly

Even if a deadbolt lock is installed on the door properly by a professional locksmith, it won't make a home more secure if it is not used regularly. Many homeowners tend to lock the keyed entry doorknob but often neglect to lock the deadbolt. Frenkel says “It is a good idea to teach all age appropriate household members to use the deadbolt every time they lock or unlock the door”.

CareSet Labs released the Root NPI Graph today at the 2017 Academy Health ARM Meeting in New Orleans. This is a new, greatly improved version of the Doctor Referral teaming dataset commonly available from Medicare.

Originally created through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests by Fred Trotter and subsequently called the the “Doctor Referral Dataset” as released by Medicare and “DocGraph” as released by Trotter, the original dataset debuted as one of the most disruptive dataset releases in the history of digital health. It remains a game changer for innovators and researchers, as it includes both implicit and explicit referral relationships between doctors, hospitals and other types of entities.

“Medicare is the largest single payer in the United States, and the map of the healthcare system that can be generated from its claims database is one of the most comprehensive pictures of the healthcare system in the United States,” says Trotter.

Trotter’s company CareSet uses the data to help pharmaceutical companies launch new drugs, and many of the top pharmaceutical companies. “I believe this dataset should be available to any researcher or innovator that can use the data to decrease the cost of healthcare and improve patient outcomes,” he says.

While the dataset can be viewed as the defacto map of the US healthcare system, it is also the largest graph data set that is 100% available using real names (doctor names, in this case). LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter all have bigger graphs, but they are not 100% available to researchers. The original dataset is in broad distribution and in use by hundreds of companies including The Advisory Board, Price Waterhouse Cooper, and the Federal Trade Commission.
