Sharon Kleyne, host of the nationally syndicated radio program The Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water, Global Climate Change and Your Health on VoiceAmerica sponsored by Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®, recently welcomed on the air a special guest from London, England, Fred Pearce, celebrated author, freelance journalist and Environmental Consultant to discuss earth’s water crisis, water shortages in the Middle East and climate change.

Pearce, author of When the Rivers Run Dry, Earth Then and Now and other books, has worked as an Environmental Consultant and water researcher for more than thirty years. Like Kleyne, Pearce believes that the root of all problems on earth, including climate change, is the planet’s water crisis. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when earth’s population was so much smaller, he explained, humanity could use water once, let it run off to the sea and wait for nature’s natural cycle to replenish the water humans needed through rainfall. However, now that the human population on earth has exploded, we need to take steps to speed up the supplementation process.

Chiefly, according to Pearce, this involves recycling waste water and in some cases redirecting the flow of rivers. Describing recycling, Pearce pointed to Singapore, where recycled waste water is being channeled back into reservoirs to be used again instead of allowing it to run to the ocean. Kleyne, the founder and director of Bio-Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science®, agrees that this model must be implemented in cities all around the globe in order to save lives and reduce the outbreak of stress-related and other diseases.

At the opposite extreme, Kleyne points to the Middle East where fear and poor farming practices have created an even greater desert than existed there before. “Yet, what governments in the Middle East really want is water,” Kleyne says. So far, poor decisions have thwarted them. Pearce notes how during the war the Iraqi government forced the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers away from the marshes, effectively drying them out. “The more water you remove from the soil,” says Kleyne, “which is a living organism, the drier you make the atmosphere, which contains the water vapor you need to breathe in order to live and be healthy.”

Pearce sees the ongoing diversion and drying up of rivers as a major and devastating crisis. “Rivers like the Nile are no longer running to the sea,” he says. This interrupts nature’s natural process of replenishing water, creating water scarcity and hotter temperatures. “Water has got to be our number one priority every day,” says Kleyne.

“Most of us,” adds Pearce, “will experience climate change more through changes of water than changes of temperature. I believe that water will be the number one issue in the 21st century for all of us.”

IBTS Completes Phase One of the NLC Small Cities Resilience Competition

IBTS has completed baseline resilience assessments for the two-semifinalists of the NLC Small Cities Resilience Competition and now move forward to select a winner.

The Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has completed the first phase of the National League of Cities (NLC) Small Cities Resilience Competition for the two semi-finalist cities, Germantown, TN, and Norristown, PA.

Last fall, IBTS and NLC invited cities of 100,000 residents or less to apply for the competition, the winner of which would receive direct, on-the-ground assistance to strengthen their social, economic, and government resilience through local projects. The goal of the program is for IBTS subject matter experts to provide a baseline assessment of the communities’ current resilience to natural and man-made hazards, as well as provide a project impact analysis to determine the impact a given capital improvement program may have on the cities’ baselines. This results in actionable solutions for improving weaker areas of resilience and to ultimately support cities to increase their safety, stability, and prosperity.

IBTS just completed phase one of this program, which was to provide preliminary assessments, conduct an on-site baseline assessment, and facilitate a resilience workshop. IBTS will announce the winner of the competition in January, 2018.

During phase two, IBTS will provide additional technical assistance to the winning community. This will include project selection and prioritization, financial consultation, and recommendations on implementing proposed capital improvement projects that will improve the community’s economic, social, and government resilience.

“I chose to spend more time with the team than I thought I would. When I got home, I said I had the best day, they got me thinking about resilience and our approach a bit differently,” said Patrick Lawton, City Manager of Germantown, TN.

“This has been my career for 30 years, and I’ve learned so much during this workshop. The knowledge base of IBTS staff has been incredible,” said Betsy Helsel, Assistant Director of Planning and Municipal Development of Norristown, PA.

The acknowledgment was given in the December edition of the publication where ConnecPath founder, Leo Sanada, described how the app has been revolutionizing the college application process.

The founding team of ConnecPath includes Sanada. a tech-savvy CEO with an education background, and Pradeep Reddy, a CTO with a strong tech background.

Sanada met with Reddy in Silicon Valley in July 2017 and quickly assimilated the tech genius/expert into ConnecPath.

“We saw a great fit as a founding team,” Sanada said.

The origins of ConnecPath go back to where Sanada was doing an internship at Skyline High School in Ann Arbor while he was completing his MBA at the University of Michigan. During his time at the high school Sanada recognized a need in the college counseling process and set out to solve it with a AI-power chat-bot app that acts as a virtual career counselor.

Reddy has been working in the software development industry for over 10 years. He has a passion for AI and a background as a VR researcher and data scientist and his skills and talent fit into the ConnecPath vision.

Thanks to the help of StartupHouse Foundry Program, an incubator program based in San Francisco, the company incorporated and fast-tracked their growth.

“The biggest lesson I learned was that without proving the concept of business by gaining traction, hardly any investors get interested in a startup business,” Sanada said of the program.

“The experience made me more prepared to talk with stakeholders such as target users and investors.”

By September, ConnecPath launched its mobile app in both the Apple App Store and Google PlayStore, making it accessible to a large group of students on both OS. They released a web version early in December.

The company has been rapidly growing since their inception and earning recognition and respect across the industry.

In November, ConnecPath won the Edvation Summit 2017 competition, which was held in Tokyo. The award is a feature booth at the SXSWedu conference to be held in Austin, Texas March 5-8.

The startup was pitted against five other finalists but was able to win over the judges with its AI-focused app.

“The fact that high school seniors receive around 10 minutes of time to make one of the biggest decisions of their lives in what college to apply for – and even if that is the right choice for them – formed the backbone of our winning pitch at Edvation Summit,” Sanada said at the time.

“It’s our objective to provide more support and faster access to information, unleashing the power of AI to save time, orchestrate teamwork and enrich subsequent student and guidance counselor conversations.”

Over the past few months, ConnecPath has developed a fabulous user experience for students on a massive scale. The founders are dedicated to delivering personalized support to each teen using the power of technology and scalability. They have also heavily invested time and effort to polish the AI-driven solution.

The app continuously adds new features for counselors to help make their job easier with a more positive impact for high school students.

Lambda Technologies Extends the Life of Orthopedic Implants

Eliminating Fretting Fatigue Failure in Hip and Knee Implants with Designed Residual Compression

Lambda Technologies has developed a surface treatment for modular orthopedic implants that completely eliminates the chance of failure from fretting fatigue. Low plasticity burnishing (LPB®) applies a deep, beneficial surface layer of designed residual compression to mitigate fretting fatigue in titanium implants. By putting the edge of contact region in high residual compression much deeper than the shallow shear cracks formed by fretting, the cracks cannot propagate, and chance of fracture from fretting is eliminated.

Millions of people have regained their mobility because of hip or knee implant technology. Day- to-day activities of the implant recipient, particularly in those who are active, can lead to repeated metal-to-metal sliding contact in the joint, leaving the implant vulnerable to fretting induced fatigue cracks and, potentially, failure in the edge-of-contact region. In cases where failure does occur, follow up or “revision” surgeries are required, significantly affecting the quality of life of patients. Fatigue testing of the modular hip and knee prosthesis systems by original manufacturers showed that LPB treatment improves the baseline fatigue strength by nominally 40%, and completely eliminated the occurrence of fretting induced failure.

In the US, the FDA has approved Lambda’s LPB process for extending the life of modular prostheses. During the twelve-plus years that orthopedic surgeons have been using LPB treated hip implants, and approximately three years of LPB treated knee implants, no LPB processed implant has failed from fretting fatigue. “The cost savings and improvement in the quality of life for patients is immeasurable. And as an added bonus, the ease of implementation of LPB into existing production environments in CNC mills or lathes has made it very cost-effective for the manufacturers, “says Dr. N. Jayaraman, Director of Materials Research for Lambda Technologies.

The new "200" series line will debut at CES 2018 in Las Vegas and will begin shipping in January.

HomeSeer's new smart home wall switches, dimmers and fan controllers are equipped with multicolored RGB LEDs that respond to wireless Z-Wave commands. This allows homeowners to control the color of each LED or switch based on their personal preference or based on the changing status of things in their home.

In normal mode, wall switches glow to reflect the status of each circuit using a palette of 7 possible colors. Colors can be set once and left or can be programmed to change every day or on holidays, birthdays and other special events.

In status mode, individual LEDs can be controlled to reflect the status of nearly anything in the home. If it's after midnight and the garage door was left open, specific LEDs can be programmed to glow yellow (or any color). If a smoke alarm goes off, all LEDS on all switches can blink red. If no status conditions are active, wall switches automatically return to normal mode.

This will be complimentary to their respective roles as Chief Executive Officer and President, where they currently provide oversight to IBTS’s work. This shift is part of the organization’s continued succession planning efforts, which includes the addition of Chief Operating Officer, Dion Rudnicki, and Chief Marketing and Development Officer, Chris Fennell, earlier this year.
