Best-in-class solution ensures sponsors and CROs have global access to efficient, accurate, and scalable medical imaging to drive better data and outcomes

Doylestown, Pa. (PRWEB) November 06, 2017

Bioclinica®, the world-leading provider of scientific-enabled Medical Imaging, eHealth, and patient-centric solutions supporting clinical research, today announces it has acquired Silicon Valley-based MDDX Research & Informatics, adding the industry’s most advanced cloud research image management and submission technologies to its extensive suite of eHealth solutions.

With the acquisition comes MDDX’s best-in-class, cloud-based image submission technology, which will become the backbone of Bioclinica’s SMART solution. SMART, which stands for Submit, Manage, Analyze, Report, and Transfer, is a robust suite of centralized medical imaging services designed to manage the complex imaging process from image receipt and analysis to regulatory submission. This SMART Submit innovation will make the image submission process easier, faster, and cleaner for clinical research sites anywhere around the globe – leading to higher-quality data for submissions and better outcomes.

Bioclinica President and CEO John Hubbard, PhD, said, “Combining the MDDX technology suite with Bioclinica, including advanced cloud research image management and services, is a perfect match, especially for sponsors who want the assurance that the critical medical imaging component of a clinical trial is managed efficiently, accurately, and reliably, regardless of where the trial is held in the world.” Dr. Hubbard continued, “Making the sophisticated and proven MDDX technology the backbone of our medical image submission solution means that Bioclinica customers can now rely on a unique combination of the industry’s most experienced medical imaging professionals and the most advanced imaging technologies.”

"Harpoon Medical has relied on MDDX since the inception of our clinical protocols in Europe. The reliability and ease of the system interface has allowed our research sites to quickly upload images so that review for treatment decisions and core lab adjudications can be accomplished efficiently,” said Robert Villanueva, Director of Clinical Research, Harpoon Medical. “We are excited they’ve joined the Bioclinica family and look forward to seeing both teams leverage their respective resources to simplify and accelerate clinical trials.”

MDDX founder and chief designer Dan Gebow, PhD, joined by his full team of image data technologists and software engineers, will head up research image management at Bioclinica. Gebow is known as an industry disruptor, bringing advancements with image quality control, large file transport and global cloud-based high-speed transmission. Gebow said, “Bioclinica has been the hands-down industry leader in imaging and scientific integrity for clinical trials. Together with MDDX’s leading-edge technologies we will accelerate the pace of disease discovery, treatment and medical devices while opening new possibilities for cross-trial image data insights.”

The FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliant MDDX platform was recognized earlier this year with a Pharma Tech Outlook ‘Top 10 Providers of CDM solutions, 2017’ award. The platform, powered by artificial intelligence and machine-learning technologies, integrated over 1,500 screening and de-identification rules to detect image issues and automatically de-identify any standard image type. An online hosting environment brings clients the added benefits of real-time access to imaging data complete with audit trail transparency.

Medical Imaging & eHealth Solutions President David Herron said, “This exciting acquisition brings us the gold-standard platform for collecting, screening, storing, and sending pristine and HIPAAcompliant image data to Bioclinica.” The result is a holistic service for rapid submission of images from research sites direct to the image readers in a matter of minutes.

The application uses proprietary algorithms and technology and is backed by a de-identification guarantee, a zero percent error rate for images that passes their image Quality Control, and 20-year online storage to exceed even the most stringent record-retention requirements. The cloud-based system has data centers for global coverage anywhere clinical trials or postmarket surveillance projects are performed-so that upload and download speeds is never a problem for users.

Moreover, with automated compliance and standardization, the new SMART Submit will completely remove the variability of improper image de-identification and mislabeling to ensure accuracy, conformance, and efficiency of image analysis. Proprietary algorithms are used to screen image data before submission, greatly reducing downstream queries and other issues. All images are processed to meet DICOM conformance standards and to satisfy health-authority, security, and privacy regulations worldwide. To ensure traceability, unalterable and searchable audit trails record the data stream of all events.

Herron commented, “The MDDX acquisition further solidifies Bioclinica’s position as the premier global provider of research image technology and services to sponsors and Clinical Research Organizations, and the only large independent medical imaging core lab with the industry’s most advanced in-house image transfer and workflow capability.”

SMART Submit is generally available today from Bioclinica.

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and OpenNotes announced a formal collaboration today during AMIA’s 2017 Annual Symposium.

WASHINGTON (PRWEB) November 06, 2017

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and OpenNotes announced a formal collaboration today during AMIA’s 2017 Annual Symposium. The agreement will further a nationwide movement to offer patients easy access to their clinical notes.

“The evidence-base is clear: providing patients access to their physician’s notes improves physician-patient communication and trust, patient safety, and perhaps even patient outcomes,” said Thomas Payne, MD, FACP, FACMI, AMIA Board Chair and Medical Director of IT Services at the University of Washington’s UW Medicine. “AMIA is delighted to support OpenNotes towards its goal of making online access to notes the standard of care.”

“AMIA is a national leader in teaching us how to use digital platforms to accelerate healthcare transformation. We’re excited to partner with this community as the OpenNotes movement works to improve engagement, support shared decision making, and enhance the patient experience,” said Homer Chin, MD, MS, OpenNotes Electronic Health Record Expert.

While patients already have the legal right to review their records, the process of gaining access is often difficult. OpenNotes is an international movement dedicated to making that process easier by encouraging doctors, nurses, therapists, and others to share visit notes with patients online, through secure, patient portals. The overarching goal for OpenNotes is to empower patients, families, and caregivers to feel more in control of their health care decisions, and to improve both safety and healthcare value.

The collaboration will build on a shared vision that patients and families should be empowered through access to and control over their health data. As part of six Policy Principles and Positions developed in 2016 and 2017, AMIA stated that “Policies, programs, research, and care delivery should seek to empower patients through access to, and control of, their personal health information.” Numerous AMIA member organizations are already participating in OpenNotes, and the informatics community is a central part of the continued expansion of this effort.

“As evidenced by the more than 50 sessions focused on consumer and personal health informatics at AMIA’s 2017 Annual Symposium, it is clear this is the direction the industry should be heading,” said AMIA President and CEO Douglas H. Fridsma, MD, PhD, FACP, FACMI. “We're proud to work alongside OpenNotes to put our principles into practice, and we look forward to finding innovative ways to advance this important movement.”

“AMIA’s commitment to involving patients, families, and caregivers in work to improve health care is terrific,” said Catherine M. DesRoches, DrPH, Executive Director of OpenNotes. “We look forward to working even more closely with an organization that believes health record transparency is a remarkably powerful way to effect change.”

AMIA, the leading professional association for informatics professionals, is the center of action for 5,400 informatics professionals from more than 65 countries. As the voice of the nation’s top biomedical and health informatics professionals, AMIA and its members play a leading role in assessing the effect of health innovations on health policy, and advancing the field of informatics. AMIA actively supports five domains in informatics: translational bioinformatics, clinical research informatics, clinical informatics, consumer health informatics, and public health informatics. Learn more at http://www.amia.org.

OpenNotes is an international movement dedicated to making health care more open and transparent by encouraging doctors, nurses, therapists, and others to share visit notes with patients through secure, patient portals, giving patients easier access to important information they already have the legal right to receive. The goal is to empower patients, families, and caregivers to feel more in control of their health care decisions, and to improve the quality and safety of care. The movement to make ready access to visit notes the standard of care for all patients is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Peterson Center on Healthcare and Cambia Health Foundation. 451 Research: OpenStack private cloud revenue to overtake its public cloud revenue in 2018

Growth of OpenStack private cloud will overtake public cloud revenue for service providers sooner than previously anticipated

New York, NY and Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) November 06, 2017

451 Research predicts that service providers with OpenStack private cloud revenue will exceed revenue from service providers with OpenStack-based public cloud implementations in 2018, sooner than previously expected. From a regional perspective, deployments in China and APAC are now growing faster than in the rest of the world. While not the primary driver, a contributing factor is the Chinese government’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology advocating for OpenStack.

The latest study, published on the first day of OpenStack Summit 2017, forecasts OpenStack revenue will exceed $6bn by 2021, as it experiences a growth rate of 30% CAGR. OpenStack is benefiting from the increase in hybrid cloud environments with 451 Research’s Voice of the Enterprise: Storage Survey finding that 61% of the enterprises surveyed now utilize a hybrid cloud approach. Certain verticals and regions that are less enthusiastic about exclusively using hyperscalers also present a growth area for OpenStack.

451 Research believes the OpenStack development community has made progress addressing challenges in installation and rolling upgrades over the last two years, resulting in increasing production deployments. This will continue in 2018 as OpenStack becomes more shrink-wrapped and risk is reduced for enterprise use. The platform was once limited to mostly development/testing and proof-of-concept deployments but there are now mission-critical workloads on OpenStack across nearly all enterprise verticals and regions.

To date, OpenStack revenue has been overwhelmingly from service providers offering multi-tenant IaaS, but 451 Research Market Monitor finds that OpenStack growth is now shifting towards the private cloud space faster than previously expected.

While containers are eclipsing OpenStack in terms of attention, 451 Research’s OpenStack Pulse finds that very few OpenStack users are abandoning OpenStack. In reality, some of the most innovative and progressive OpenStack deployments feature the use of container technology such as Docker and Kubernetes.

“OpenStack has solidified its position as the leading open source option for building private and public cloud environments but it is no longer the shiny new toy in the industry – that torch has been passed to containers and microservices. And while there is no clear answer yet about OpenStack coexistence with containers, it is worth noting that containers and container management are nascent markets in terms of production use cases,” said Al Sadowski, Research Vice President at 451 Research.

451 Research’s OpenStack Pulse also finds that that the OpenStack market is coalescing around a handful of the top providers, just as happened with Linux. Parallels have always been drawn between OpenStack and Linux but the comparisons are even more valid today as the top Linux vendors, such as Canonical, SUSE and Red Hat, are also key OpenStack vendors.

OpenStack Pulse 2017 and 451 Research

OpenStack Pulse 2017 offers an annual check-in on the OpenStack business models that have emerged and changed, quantitative market sizing data, TCO analysis and regional perspectives. It also focuses on OpenStack’s broader role with adjacent technologies such as containers and container management.

451 Research is a preeminent information technology research and advisory company. The Secret to Programming the Human Mind

Author Robert L. Blackburn bases new thriller on his own discoveries in his new book.

Lexington, Ky. (PRWEB) November 06, 2017

Charley Black unlocks the secret to programming the human mind. He writes about his findings, but goes mostly unnoticed throughout his work and publishing. That is, until the government stumbles upon his website and decides he knows too much.

In “The Rogue Revolutionist,” by Robert L. Blackburn, Black is suddenly fighting for his life after quietly trying to change the world on his own, for years. Like Black, Blackburn has also made it his mission to create awareness about the computer model of the human mind and how it can bring sanity to a world headed for self-destruction.

“The computer model of the human mind shows us how the mind operates to seek its own survival,” Blackburn said, “and how humans trick the human survival program into seeking the survival of all sorts of things unrelated to a long, pleasurable and pain-free continuance.”

Blackburn, who served in the U.S. Army Intelligence and authored several other pieces of literature based on the human mind and its abilities, claims, like his character, that the computer model of the human mind can extract humans from the situation in which they find themselves.

“Using this computer model of the mind to show humans what they are doing to themselves with their belief systems, they will finally have the opportunity to stop doing it. People will have a legitimate choice between the tyranny of beliefs or pure reason.”

Startup QFO Labs® Sues Three Major Minnesota Retailers Selling Parrot-branded Drones Allegedly Infringing Its Patents

Lawsuits Petition Federal Court to Stop Sales of ‘Tilt-to-Fly’ Parrot Quadcopters.

MINNEAPOLIS (PRWEB) November 06, 2017

QFO Labs (http://www.QFOlabs.com), a drone technology licensing firm, announced today it is seeking an injunction in Federal Court (Minnesota District) to protect its patents for handheld “tilt-to-fly” control technology it began developing in Minnesota more than 15 years ago. It seeks to stop the sale of consumer drone products manufactured by France-based Parrot SA at three major retailers that have a presence in Minnesota: Best Buy, Target, and Amazon.

Parrot SA is one of the top two largest sellers of consumer drone products in the world. The lawsuits name approximately a dozen separate Parrot-branded drone models that QFO says infringe on its patents. The majority of sales for these products occur during the holiday season.

“We’re a startup that’s not afraid to fight back against this big French company,” said Brad Pedersen, the CEO and cofounder of QFO Labs. “We intend to defend the intellectual property we worked hard for years to develop and commercialize.”

QFO Labs was an early pioneer of quadcopter/drone technology, inventing its tilt-to-fly patents in the early 2000s, three years before other tilt-based gaming controllers like the Nintendo Wii® were introduced. Before smartphones were introduced in the late 2000s, the accelerometer chips needed for tilt-to-fly controllers were too expensive for retail consumer products; but by 2013, both QFO and Parrot had tilt-to-fly drone products for sale at specialty retailer Brookstone.

Pedersen continued: “As a startup, we’re just trying to do the right thing to protect our patents. We’re very proud of what we developed right here in Minnesota. After trying our best to get our product into the market, we realized that the future of QFO Labs would be as a licensing company, not a manufacturer. Although we don’t like having to sue retailers in our home state, this is the only strategy we have left if we want to use the courts here in Minnesota.”

The following three cases were filed in Federal District Court, District of Minnesota, on November 3, 2017:

  • QFO Labs, Inc. v. Amazon.com, Inc., CASE 0:17-cv-05014
  • QFO Labs, Inc. v. Best Buy Co., Inc., CASE 0:17-cv-05011
  • QFO Labs, Inc. v. Target Corporation, CASE 0:17-cv-05012

About QFO Labs, Inc.

Based in Minneapolis, QFO Labs is a drone technology licensing company whose cofounders began developing unique, patented technology relating to drones more than 15 years ago. The latest iteration of the company was founded in 2011 with an initial focus on creating new high-tech consumer drone products, based on a library of U.S. patents and patent applications. It successfully launched its “quadcopter” drone product after a Kickstarter project in 2012, and later marketed the product successfully through a nationwide retail and ecommerce partner in 2013 and 2014. Since then, the company shifted its focus to licensing its popular tilt-to-fly features and related drone and gaming technologies to other companies. This innovation preserves delicate organic structures and produces the purest possible and most potent natural extracts.

It was this powerful research which led to Abundant identifying elevated concentrations of lycopene - a powerful antioxidant which is proven to improve the firmness and texture of human skin - in their tomatoes.

“Abundant skincare harnesses the power of nature and science in a way that’s never been seen before to produce scientifically proven, pure, active botanicals that deliver immediate results,” said CEO Shanan Birkin.

“You won’t find anything on the Australian market with the potency and purity of these ingredients,” she added.

The bioactive lycopene is the hero ingredient of Tomato Infusion Daily Face Cream, the first product in Abundant’s Lycopene Face Range.

Very aware of the growing concerns about the hazards of synthetic chemicals, making natural products the fastest growing segment of the personal care market, Abundant is passionate about transparency and traceability.

“We’re proudly 100% Australian grown, owned and made, so we can vouch for the quality, purity and processes that produce these game changing products. We love that we’re also supporting local industry and communities in every stage of the lifecycle of our products. We want to be the number one in natural skincare and the ethical brand of choice.  We're taking ingredients from our greenhouse,” Birkin finished.

Additional products in the Abundant line will follow later this year with further product launches on the horizon in 2018, leveraging equally innovative, active and impactful natural ingredients.

Scientists return on Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor after conducting underwater robotic dives in never before visited waters in the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA).

Apia, Samoa (PRWEB) November 06, 2017

Seventeen underwater robotic dives have been made using ROV SuBastian, completing the first expedition of the islands and eastern seamounts of the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) in the nation of Kiribati. This follows an initial exploration of the western seamounts by the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer. “This journey was in the tradition of the grand research expeditions of the past,” said Chief Scientist Dr. Erik Cordes from Temple University. “We traveled nearly 3,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean and explored a part of the world that has remained entirely hidden from view until now.”

The expedition on board of R/V Falkor has made a major contribution to the field of marine science, defining the habitat zones of a seamount from the deep sea to the surface for the first time, and discovering at least two new species of coral and crab. Researchers collected the deep sea specimens by using a new soft robotics technology, “squishy fingers”, for adaptive sampling developed by the Wyss Institute and Harvard University and further refined by 3D printing on board while at sea.

All the robotic dives were livestreamed in high definition on Schmidt Ocean Institute’s YouTube and Facebook page, attracting over 100,000 views. The diving and camera technology on ROV SuBastian allowed the scientists to make new observations of octopus behavior; and capture one of the deepest records of mantis shrimp observed. Videos will be held in perpetuity showcasing breathtaking footage of deep coral reefs, dumbo octopuses, and six-gill sharks.

“This expedition will help to inform conservation and management goals for the region,” said one of the expedition leads Dr. Randi Rotjan, from Boston University. “As deep-sea mining continues to gain traction in the region, this information will help to inform responsible management of deep sea communities.”

The Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) was the first large marine protected area to include substantial deep water habitat in its boundaries. As of Jan 1, 2015, PIPA became fully closed to all extractive and commercial activities (with the exception of a small sustainable use zone around Kanton), generating an ideal space to ask questions about ecological baselines and species distribution. “Despite our intensive exploration of eight previously unmapped seamounts and island atolls, from 2,400 m, to a shallow 100 m, there was very little evidence of human presence”, said Dr. Tim Shank of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and one of the Principal Investigators of the expedition. “We encountered a high biodiversity in these areas and the recent establishment of the protected area can ensure we have important model deep-sea systems for future research.”

The New York Audio Show this coming weekend offers music lovers 60+ brands and 40+ exhibitors along with recording experts Jim Anderson and Ulrike Schwarz.

NYC, New York (PRWEB) November 06, 2017

Music aficionados from New York City and beyond are in for their yearly treat with the upcoming New York Audio Show from November 10-12, and chance to hear from two extra special guests.

Just for their pleasure, dozens of hotel rooms at the Park Lane Hotel on Central Park South will be stripped bare so they emulate a family lounge room or home theatre setting.

Nowhere else in the city can music lovers appreciate more than 60 brands from the world’s finest audio products plus 40 exhibitors in one place in such an appealing five-star location.

BYO music is encouraged: from hip-hop to classical. It’s the best way to relax, hear and compare preferred music choices in as natural a home environment as possible.

Visitors to the show can get hands-on experience on all types of gear including speakers, electronics, turntables, headphones, music streamers and computer systems.

Held over two-and-a-half days, it’s a show that allows you to buy equipment, but be under zero pressure to do so.

Roy Bird, CEO of the show organiser, the Chester Group, said he expected the top three things that visitors will want to learn is: how to stream quality audio; the real difference between analog and digital sound; and how beneficial or not hi-fi cables are.

“We know that music lovers come to the show because they care about the quality of sound reproduction and they want the best they can afford. That’s why it’s important for exhibitors to have the best acoustics possible in each room,” he said.

“All exhibitors ensure experts are on hand to address any questions; for example, how-to set up a sound system, stream music around the home, turn a computer into a high-end audio source, and control everything from a smartphone and tablet.”

A huge drawcard for visitors to the New York Audio Show will be recording experts Jim Anderson and Ulrike Schwarz of Anderson Audio New York, who have between them more than 60 years’ experience in producing and engineering music in many genres.

“It’s high end audio welcoming high-end music recording and production,” said Bird. “As international organisers the Chester Group is aware of the increasing overlap in these two markets, particularly with manufacturers. Visitors can expect a rolling and top-level demonstration of their expertise over the three days of the show.”

Top brands on show include: Alta Audio, AudioQuest, Definitive Technology, Denon, Krell, LG, Luxman, MarkAudio-SOTA, Oppo Digital, Salamader Designs, Sony, Technics, Triangle and exhibitors include Audio Prana, Sonner Audio, Value Electronics and Woodbridge Stereo Video.

This hugely popular event and the only one in New York City attracts thousands of visitors each year, and in its sixth year it returns to the same and excellent venue.
